As its name indicates, the canary (serinos canarias) is native to the Canary Islands. Therefore it is also encountered on the island of Madeira and the Azores islands.

What are these islands?
Discovered in 1402 by the Norman Jean de Bethencourt, the Canary Islands are part of the Spanish Atlantic archipelago. These islands are grouped under these names: Grande-Canaria, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Gomera, Palma et Hierro. Enjoying an exceptional climate, which at other times has made them called "Lucky Islands", they are the cradle of the canary. The sociability and the song of the latter, seduced the Spaniards who, realizing that this bird kept, even in a cage, all the natural faculties, understood the importance of the discovery made in these islands. The birds were captured and sent en masse to Spain, where their breeding soon became a thriving industry. Not only were the young canaries exported at a price of gold, but, wanting to preserve the monopoly of production, the Spaniards exported the males by systematically killing the females not necessary for production.
How did this monopoly end?
Legend has it that a Spanish vessel loaded with canaries was wrecked off the Island of Elba and that the birds freed, both by the crew and by the destruction of the cages, took flight, some towards the Italian coast of Tuscany, others towards the Island of Elba and the coasts of Provence. Some of these birds, male and female, were captured others made a stump in these places, later giving life to a type of mountain canary, in Corsica, in Sardinia, and in the North of Italy and in the Serino, spread in all countries. Latin and Germany. This is the legend! However, we can give it some credit because, both in the song of the mountaineer and in that of the serino we find certain tones similar to those of the canary. Another assumption has it that the Spanish breeders, for an immediate personal interest, supplied females to foreign countries. Whatever the causes, the Spanish monopoly ended and the breeding of the canary spread rapidly throughout Europe. At first it was the prerogative of the higher social classes who aspired to keep him in a cage or raise him for "snobbism", but soon it spread to all other classes and was raised, either for passion or sport, or for research or creation. , both for financial purposes. From the aspiration of the amateurs to come together to compare their subjects, the Ornithological Societies were soon born which began to organize exhibitions and competitions where the canaries were judged for their quality of singing, shape and color.

With the vulgar denomination of "Canaries" various species of birds of the Genus Serinus are indicated he wrote to the Family of Finches belonging to the Order of Passerines. The Class of the Birds is subdivided into 26 Orders and among these, that of the Passerines alone comprises more than the five eighths of all the living species of birds. The size of the Passerines varies from about 7 centimeters of the smallest species to the meter and over of the largest ones. All the species of this Order have inept offspring, which are born with closed eyes and with the inside of the mouth colored in a striking way, often provided with dark spots and other typical structures of the juvenile age, destined to disappear with the growth. . The Passerines have a highlighted keel, a rudimentary caecum and have four fingers all on the same plane, three facing forward and one rear, usually the largest, which cannot be rotated forward. These are birds widespread all over the world with the exception of the areas near the Poles and some remote islands for number and species of individuals this order is to be considered predominant, in the entire class of birds, in every area of the surface. terrestrial. The modern axonomic division of the order of the Passerines foresee the subdivision into four Suborders.

Among the very numerous families of the Suborder of the sparrows, or Oscini if you prefer, we are interested in that of the Finches, the main one of the whole Order of the Passerines. Given the difficulty of attributing many species with intermediate characteristics to one or another Family, considerable differences can be noted between the various classification systems as regards the number of Genera and species included among the Finches. An old classification system divided the Fringillids into the three subfamilies of the Emberizini (Zigoli), Fringillini (Frunguelli), Coccotraustini (Frosoni). For another classification system, the Finches are divided into the three Subfamilies of the Fringillini (Finches), Ricmondenini (Cardinals) and Geospizini (the so-called Galapagos Finches). It should be noted that according to this classification system the most common finches such as the Cardellini and the Siskin are not part of this family but of that of the Ploceids, while that of the Geospizines is ascribed to the Finches which due to their characteristics appear much more similar to the Ploceids. . We have reported this to give an idea of the disparity of views regarding the taxonomic distribution of certain winged groupings. One of the most modern classification systems provides, for the Finch Family, the subdivision into two distinct Subfamilies:

The Finches are graceful small and medium-sized birds (10 to 23 centimeters) with an elegant body shape, with a usually conical, short, straight, pointed and robust beak, suitable for shelling the seeds that generally constitute the main food of these birds, which however also feed on fruit, insects (especially at the time of reproduction and in particular those ascribed to the first subfamily), vegetables and sprouts. The thick plumage is pleasantly colored, often in a different way in the two sexes, the tail is forked mainly in proportion to the length of the body. The males have the habit of feeding the females engaged in brooding. Generally monogamous, they usually build a robust and finished cup-shaped nest with vegetable fibers, located on the branches of trees or among bushes. Essentially granivorous species also tend to use insects for breeding nestlings. They have very developed senses and not negligible intellectual abilities. They are generally sociable but tend mostly to isolate themselves at the time of reproduction. The Finches are good or discreet flyers, but also able to move with agility on the ground, hopping with their slender but rather robust paws which are of medium length and equipped with four fingers with not long and delicate nails. We have seen that these birds are part of the Suborder of the Sparrows, whose representatives possess from four to nine pairs of elastic muscles in the phonetic apparatus: thanks to this many species are endowed with excellent singing qualities. Let's move on to examine the various species of these little birds which, as we have said, are ascribed to the Genus Serinus, one of the twenty-eight of the Carduelini subfamily. The particularly differentiated genus Serinus includes thirty species spread mainly in Africa, where a good twenty-seven species live in Asia (Asian Canary) and two in Europe (Serin and Venturone). They are birds of modest size - between 11 and 16 centimeters - with mainly greenish, brown and yellow plumage, usually variegated in dark especially on the upper walls. They have a short and robust conical spout, pointed wings, thin legs of medium length, slightly forked tail. Many species are spread over large territories and are divided into numerous subspecies. The habits, customs and needs of the Serini are substantially similar for all members of the genus. Agile flyers preferably frequent areas rich in arboreal or shrubby vegetation and where there is no lack of water they prefer hilly areas but also live in the plains and mountain areas as long as they have a constant climate. Gathered in more or less numerous groups, which in the evening tend to gather in thick flocks, to seek nourishment, they wander from one plant to another, occasionally descending even on the ground where they skip agile. They feed on small seeds, sprouts, vegetables and preferably sugary fruits. They drink and bathe frequently, so they do not depart from areas rich in water. With the approach of spring the groups of Serini dissolve and the males with agile aerial vaulting and insistently raising their song, court the females making elegant wedding parades. Once formed, the couples begin the breeding cycle by carefully choosing the site in which to nest: a tree or a shrub with thin branches and thick foliage.
Although the size of wild canaries reaches a maximum of 16 centimeters, there are some breeds of domestic canaries that reach 20-22 centimeters in length, however, despite having been subjected to numerous selections, the anatomo-morphological structure of domestic canaries has remained unchanged. the wings have ten primary remiges, eighteen secondary and in the tail there are twelve helmsmen. The Serini, being of a sociable nature, if isolated suffer greatly from loneliness, so, except in cases of singing training or in which the pathology requires it, it is always advisable to keep these birds in pairs. The average life of canaries, properly bred, is around ten years and it is not rare cases in which, animals kept in optimal conditions, reach twenty years of life. Given that, when it comes to intelligence, you shouldn't expect too much from these creatures, we will move on to give some examples of what a fully trained canary is able to do. A breeder had got into the habit of hiding a coveted morsel under a pawn on a chessboard: the trained canary soon found the morsel and repeated the exercise despite the piece being moved. Another canary learned to move a trolley just enough to allow it to get to the food. If well trained, canaries are capable of performing much more complex operations, such as playing dead after being fired from a cannon, letting themselves be transported on a trolley, and then always resurrecting on command. What described above does nothing but highlight the mnemonic and intellectual characteristics of these little birds.

Canaries' singing virtue

Below we will deal with the singing skills of Canaries, whether wild or domestic, but since the latter descend from the former, we cannot speak of real substantial differences. The song of the wild canary is more marked, fresh and melodious, but a bit harsh, as it is composed in part by metallic and acute sounds, emitted in rapid succession. However, there are some domestic breeds that stand out because they are capable of real musical virtuosity these breeds are: the Malinois and the Harzer. However, if we want to make a comparison, it is possible to compare the sounds emitted by the canaries belonging to the two aforementioned breeds, to chamber music and the song of wild canaries to the popular song for which, it is easy to understand, that the preference for one or the other variety is just a question of taste. Even in canaries as in most birds, singing is a prerogative of males, while females limit themselves to emitting more or less ringing chirps, which sometimes incite the males to emit bursting singing phrases. Numerous factors influence the singing ability, including: hereditary ones, training and the right hormonal activity, as well as the psychophysical state of the animal itself. So it is easy to understand that nutrition plays a fundamental role if healthy, rich in vitamins and accompanied by maintenance in a sunny and airy environment contributes positively to the production of endocrine glands, making the vibrations of the appropriate membranes more rapid. In short, you don't want to sing unless you are in good health and in a comfortable environment

The sounds emitted by the lovebirds - The song of the lovebirds

Shinto or Shinto, or simply Shinto (Japanese: ?? Shinto), is a native religion of Japan and in the past it was its state religion. It involves the worship of kami, a term that can be translated as divinity, natural spirits or simply spiritual presences. Some kami are local and can be considered as the guardian spirits of a particular place, but others can represent a specific object or a natural event, such as Amaterasu, the sun goddess. The word Shinto was born from the union of the two kanji: ? shin which means "divinity", "being of light" (the character can also be read as kami in Japanese) and? to contraction of Tao ("way" or "path" in the philosophical sense). Hence, Shinto literally means "the way of the beings of light", "the way of the gods". As an alternative to Shinto, the purely Japanese expression — with the same meaning — for Shinto is Kami no michi.

After the Second World War Shinto lost its status as a state religion some Shinto practices and teachings that were considered of great prominence during the war are now no longer taught or practiced while others remain widely used as daily practices without however taking on particular religious connotations. , like Omikuji (a form of divination).

History of the Shinto religion

Prehistoric period
The origins of Shinto have been lost over time, but it seems to have originated at the end of the last Jomon period. There are several theories regarding the ancestors of the Japanese people today, the most accepted is the one that indicates them as descendants of populations of Central Asia and Indonesia.

More likely after the arrival of the first ancestors of the Japanese people, each tribe and area had its own collection of deities and rituals with no relationship between one local cult and another. Following the rise of the ancestors of today's Japanese imperial family, a stable pantheon was probably created, although never definitively, as even today the divinities are innumerable, precisely because they are considered a manifestation of nature itself, sacred in all its forms.

The great Buddha of Nara, around 752
Relations with Buddhism

The introduction of writing in the fifth century and Buddhism in the sixth century had a profound impact on the development of a unified system of Shinto beliefs. Within a short period of time at the beginning of the Nara period, the Kojiki (Memoirs of Ancient Events, 712) and the Nihonshoki (Annals of Japan, c. 720) were written compiling existing myths and legends into a unified account (see entry on Japanese mythology). These accounts were written with a dual purpose: firstly to encourage the introduction of Taoist, Confucian and Buddhist themes into the narrative, aimed at impressing the Chinese by demonstrating that Japanese culture was not inferior to theirs and secondly these narratives were aimed at legitimizing and supporting the imperial house, making it descend from the sun goddess Amaterasu. Much of the territory of modern Japan was under piecemeal control by the imperial family, and neighboring rival ethnic groups (including perhaps the ancestors of the Ainu) continued to be hostile. Mythological anthologies, along with other anthologies of poems such as the Manyoshu, helped to strengthen the centrality of the imperial family by supporting and deifying its government mandate.

With the introduction of Buddhism and its rapid adoption at court, it became necessary to explain the apparent difference between the native Japanese creed and Buddhist teachings. In fact, Shinto did not have a name until it became necessary to distinguish it from Buddhism. The latter did not penetrate by sweeping away the previous Japanese faith, but on the contrary contributed to its consolidation. In fact, it legitimized all the Japanese gods, considering them as supernatural entities trapped in the cycle of rebirths. This explanation was later challenged by the Kukai current which regarded the kami as special incarnations of the Buddha himself. For example, he linked the sun goddess, and ancestor of the imperial family, Amaterasu, to Dainichi Nyorai, a manifestation of the Buddha, whose name literally means "Great Solar Buddha". According to this view, the kami were simply Buddhas with another name. Parallel to theology, the two systems of values also progressively supported each other and exchanged elements: there is in fact a strong compatibility between the naturalistic teachings of Shintoism and the compassionate ones of Buddhism.

The coexistence and amalgamation of Buddhism and Shinto from the points of view of Shinbutsu Shugo and syncretism was widespread until the end of the Edo Period. A renewed interest in Japanese studies (Kokugaku) arose at that time, perhaps as a result of the closed country policy. In the 18th century with various Japanese scholars, notably Motoori Norinaga (1730 - 1801), there were various attempts to separate Shinto from foreign influences. The attempts were not very successful, since the time of Nihonshoki, when parts of Shinto theology and creationism were explicitly borrowed from Chinese doctrine (for example the procreative deities Izanami and Izanagi were compared to the energies of the Tao, Yin and Yang) . However, these attempts paved the way for the introduction of state Shinto, following the Meiji Restoration, by which Shinto and Buddhism were officially separated.

The mythological legends, emphasized by state Shinto
State Shinto

Following the Meiji Restoration, Shinto was proclaimed the official religion of Japan and in 1868 its combination with Buddhism was made illegal. In this period many Kokugaku scholars began to see Shinto as a means by which to unify the country and increase its devotion to the emperor, to speed up the modernization process as much as possible. The psychological shock of the black ships and the consequent collapse of the shogunate convinced many that only a united nation could resist the colonization of foreign peoples. As a result, Shinto was used as a tool to promote the worship of the emperor (and therefore of one's own nation) and was exported to conquered territories such as Hokkaido and Korea.

In 1871 a Ministry of Divinities was established and the Shinto temples were divided into twelve levels with headquarters at the Ise temple (dedicated to Amaterasu and therefore symbolizing the legitimacy of the imperial family). In the following years, the Ministry of Gods was replaced by a new institution, the Ministry of Religion, charged with guiding the education of the shushin (literally "moral path"). This was one of the major reversals since the Edo period. Priests began to be officially elected, paid and commissioned by the state to educate young people through a form of Shinto theology based on the mythological history of the imperial house and the Japanese state.

Over time, Shinto was increasingly used to emphasize popular nationalist sentiments. In 1890 the Kyoiku Chokugo (Imperial Rescript on Education) was promulgated which required students to ritually recite the oath to offer themselves courageously to the state, as well as to protect the imperial family. The practice of Emperor worship was further spread by the distribution of imperial portraits as objects of esoteric veneration. This use of Shintoism gave Japanese patriotism a tinge of special mysticism and cultural introversion, which became more and more pronounced with the passage of time.

This process continued to consolidate during the Showa period before coming to an abrupt halt in August 1945, with the separation of the Shinto church and state. Ironically, the invasion of the West so feared at the beginning of the Meiji era had finally arrived, partly due to the radicalization of Japan permitted by its religious compactness.

The era of state Shinto ended abruptly with the end of World War II. Shortly after the end of the war, the emperor publicly announced the renunciation of his status as an earthly divinity and denied the descent of the imperial family from the goddess Amaterasu. As a result of the results of the war, many Japanese concluded that the cause of the defeat was the hubris of the Empire. The lust for foreign territories blinded their leaders by extolling the importance of their homeland. In the aftermath of the war, numerous Shinshukyo (new religious sects) appeared, many of them ostensibly based on Shintoism.

After the war, Shinto insisted with less emphasis on mythology and the divine mandate of the imperial family. Instead, temples tended to focus on social activities, aimed at helping ordinary people improve their conditions or themselves, maintaining good relationships with ancestors and gods. After the war, the general practice of Shinto rituals did not decrease. The explanation normally given for this anomaly is that following the demise of state Shintoism, the religion has returned to its traditional, culturally rooted, rather than imposed, position. In any case, Shinto and its values continue to be a fundamental component of Japanese life and mentality.

Categorization and structure

Religious classification

Daikoku, one of the seven gods of fortune, Shinto is a difficult religion to classify. On the one hand it can be considered merely as a very organized form of animism, but the presence of a definite mythology makes it more of a polytheistic religion with shamanic traits. Life after death is not a primary concern and more emphasis is placed on finding harmony in this world than on preparing for the next. Shinto has no binding sets of dogmas, no holy place above all others to worship, no person or kami considered more sacred than the others, and no definite set of prayers. Rather, Shinto is a collection of rituals and methods, intended to mediate relationships between humans and kami. These characteristics give Shinto a character of simple and effective completeness, characteristics that allow it to survive today, making it an important and millenary religion. These practices originated organically in Japan over many centuries and were influenced by contact with foreign religions, especially Chinese. Note, for example, that the word Shinto itself is of Chinese origin and that many of the codifications of Shinto mythology were formed with the explicit purpose of responding to Chinese cultural influence. In the same way, Shinto has had, and continues to have, a dominant influence on the practice of other religions in Japan. In particular, it could also be discussed under the heading of Japanese Buddhism, as the two religions have exerted a profound influence on each other throughout the history of Japan.

Some believe that Shinto was used for ideological legitimization during the militaristic phase that followed the Meiji Restoration. Since Shinto has no sources of absolute authority, some believe it was a natural expression of the people's beliefs, exploited by radical nationalists who wished to unify Japan. Others question whether Shinto's emphasis on Japanese exceptionalism has not made these developments inevitable. Even today, some far-right factions of Japanese society want Shinto to be emphasized more and the reverence shown to the emperor to increase as part of a project to bring the country into its rightful place as the world's leading nation. Despite this, for most Japanese, following Shintoism does not mean expressing contempt for other nations, but rather expressing one's love for the nature of Japan and the whole world, the people and the spirits and deities who inhabit it.

Essentially five expressions of Shinto can be recognized. These should not be considered as real currents in their own right, but more than anything else of the different forms of worship all aimed at the same goal, that is to reach the same truths. Particular cases, however, are those of sectarian and state Shintoism.

Imperial Shintoism (Koshitsu Shinto): this term indicates the rites performed by the emperor to worship the myriad of kami and in particular the goddess Amaterasu Omikami, in order to ensure the continuity of the state, the happiness of the people and world peace. These rites are independent from those of Templar Shinto.
Templar Shintoism (Jinja Shinto): this term indicates institutionalized Shintoism (born immediately after the fall of State Shintoism), based on worship within jinja temples. In general, it is organized Shinto and in fact represents the cornerstone of all religious activities and even of the other strands of the Shinto religion. Although it was established only in the last century, its roots are fixed in prehistory. Most of the temples are members of the Jinja Honcho, Shinto Temple Association.
Sectarian Shintoism (Shuha Shinto or Kyoha): it is composed of thirteen groups (Urozumikyo, Shintoism Shuseiha, Izumo Oyashirokyo, Fusokyo, Jikkokyo, Shinshukyo, Shinto Taiseikyo, Ontakekyo, Shintotaikyo, Misogikyo, formally declared not to be a form of Shinto) formed during the 19th century, when Shinto temples were separated from other religious institutions and used to conduct rites and celebrations under the direction of the state (state Shintoism).
Folk Shinto (Minzoku Shinto): is the form practiced by people without being formalized includes the numerous, but fragmented, popular beliefs in spirits and deities. Practices include divination, exorcism and shamanic healings. Some of these practices come from the influence of Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism, others are direct expressions of local traditions.
State Shinto (Kokka Shinto): was the result of the Meiji Restoration and the fall of the shogunate. He attempted to purify Shinto by abolishing many Buddhist and Confucian ideals. According to most opinions it was a strongly monopolized type of Shinto, sometimes even so distorted that it lost its religious meanings and teachings and became a mere form of nationalism. Following the Japanese defeat in World War II it was abolished and the emperor forced to renounce his status as a deity.

A palace of the Jinja Honcho. In February 1946, with the publication of the so-called Shinto Directive, all the temples organized themselves into a national administration called the Association of Shinto Temples, in effect a Shinto Church, an unorthodox term although commonly used. The Japanese name is Jinja Honcho. The aim of this institution was immediately to organize and preserve the traditional Japanese religious culture. The Church today administers thousands of temples throughout Japan and a hundred schools. In recent decades he has also shown a certain openness to foreign countries, in fact he has begun to export Shintoism, building the first temples in America and Australia and ordaining the first non-Japanese Shinto priests.

Clerical organization

Shinto priest. After the Meiji era, when Japan officially opened its doors to the West for trade, the hereditary system of the Shinto priestly order was abolished, introducing the seminary system similar to other religions, although some temples still exist today. family run. Priests are free to marry and lead a family life outside the religious one.

The Shinto priestly system is divided into four main orders: Johkai, Meikai, Gonseikai and Cokkai. Each priest (kannushi) of these groups undertakes a career characterized by six degrees of specialization: the Superior Degree, the First Degree, the Second, the Intermediate Degree, the Third and the Fourth Degree. Exceeding these grades allows access to the next order. Levels after the intermediate are conferred only on priests who have professed for more than twenty years, although there are exceptions due to the particular culture, wisdom and preparation of the individual. To become Guji, or the chief priest of an important temple, it is necessary to obtain the highest rank of the Meikai order. To become Guji of a not very eminent temple one must reach the highest degree of the Gonseikai order.

After the Second World War the priesthood was also open to women, today very important in the Shinto clergy: in fact the practice of Kaguramai, the sacred dance in honor of the gods is generally performed only by women and the main authority of the Ise temple, commonly considered the heart of Shinto, she is a priestess. A priestess (kannushi) should not be confused with a miko. The role of miko, the so-called virgins, is usually assigned for a certain period to teenage girls or boys (usually females), and frequently they are the daughters of the priests. The task of the miko is to assist priests in the various preparations for rites and feasts, a role very similar to that of Christian altar boys. The miko are characterized by the characteristic white and red dress.

Today the priesthood can be obtained through a system of seminaries, frequent throughout Japan and often run by temples. There are also Shinto priesthood courses at two universities: Kokugakuin University in Tokyo and Kogakkan University in Mie, both administered by Jinja Honcho. In provincial areas it is common, in the absence of a priest, to annually assign the celebration of rituals and holidays to a member of the community, even without a priestly title.

Practices and teachings

Nature is sacred in all its forms.
Life after death

According to the Shinto faith, the human spirit is eternal, just like the kami. As in most oriental conceptions, the afterlife is conceived by Shinto as a kind of higher existential level. Therefore, when you die, for Shintoism, you simply change the form of existence, you access another type of existence (see the section on particular kami). This is the most modern conception.

Since Shinto has coexisted peacefully with Buddhism for over a millennium it is very difficult to separate Buddhist from Shinto beliefs. It can be said that while Buddhism emphasizes life after death, Shinto emphasizes this life and the pursuit of happiness in it, although they have very different perspectives on the world, most Japanese see no need to reconcile the two religions and therefore he practices both. Therefore it is common for many people to practice Shinto while alive and still be buried with a Buddhist funeral.

In ancient Shinto, more weight was obviously given to mythology. People believed in a series of paradises, so there was already the conception of existential plurality, even if not philosophically expressed among the people. These paradises include: the beyond of the sky, the afterlife Yomi, the afterlife Tokoyo, the afterlife of the mountains. These places are described neither as pleasant places nor with infernal characteristics, but as places very similar to the terrestrial world.

“Sincerity leads to truth. Sincerity is wisdom, which unites man and the divine into one. "

"Be charitable to all beings: love is the first characteristic of the divine."

Shinto has an infinity of positive teachings, which also arise as consequences of its fundamental precepts. A first ethical rule is certainly availability towards others. The Shinto religion teaches that man must always offer himself to help others, charitably, sincerely and lovingly, to maintain harmony and well-being in society. Consequently, Shinto encourages the containment of selfishness and self-centeredness, while promoting humility instead.

Nature is eternal symmetry and balance. "There is no place for selfishness in Shinto."

"Admitting a mistake is the first sign of great wisdom."

The Shinto cult generally places the interest of the community and the public welfare first. This does not mean that individual and family rights are ignored. On the contrary, it is against the background of religious rites, as a consequence of actions towards others, that intimacy, the individual character of a person and his relationships with others are widely promoted.

Although Shinto has no absolute commandments other than to live a simple life and in harmony with nature and people, there are said to be Four Statements that express the entire ethical spirit of this religion:

The family is the main nucleus of a person's life, it is the group in which and through which a person grows up, and from which he inherits a very specific approach and vision of the world. Consequently to this great importance, the family nucleus is a necessary foundation for the well-being of the individual, and as such it must be protected and in particular kept harmonious.
Nature is sacred, as an expression of the divine, maintaining contact with it involves achieving wholeness and happiness, and it means keeping close to the kami. As such, nature must be respected, venerated and above all protected, since it is from it that the balance of life derives.
Cleansing is an essential component of Shinto, cleansing allows for purity, and purity is one of the greatest virtues. Cleanliness is essential to lead a harmonious life: the Shinto believer makes extensive use of it, both on himself and in the environments where he lives Shinto temples are always kept impeccably clean by priests.
Matsuri are the festivals dedicated to the kami. These days the faithful Shinto pray in temples, or in their own homes. To celebrate the divinities, parties, processions and banquets are set up. Matsuri are organized by temples or communities. These festivals are several throughout the year and range from the most important and national ones to those of small towns. Normal days are called ke ("day") and holiday days are called hare ("sunny" or simply "good").

Concept of impurity

According to Shinto there is nothing sinful per se, rather certain acts create a ritual impurity that a person should want to avoid simply to gain peace of mind and good luck, not because the impurity is wrong in itself. Evil and wrong acts are called kegare (literally "dirt"), and the opposite notion is kiyome (literally "purity"). The killing of a living being, considered as an unclean act, should be done with gratitude and reverence towards the animal and minimized, practiced only when highly necessary.

Source for ablutions at Itsukushima Shrine. Modern Japanese continue to greatly emphasize the importance of aisatsu, the set of ritual phrases and greetings. Before eating, many Japanese say itadakimasu ("I humbly receive [this food]"), in order to give proper respect for those who prepared and in general for all those living beings who have lost their lives to allow that meal. Failure to show respect can be seen as a sign of pride and an absence of concern for others. This attitude is avoided, as it is thought to cause problems for everyone. Those who fail to take the feelings of other people and kami into due consideration will bring their own misfortune upon themselves. The worst expression of this attitude is exploiting the lives of others for personal gain or enjoyment. It is believed that people killed at the hands of others feel urami ("grudge") and become aragami, powerful and evil spirits seeking revenge. For all these reasons, in modern Japanese companies, no action is taken until consensus and unanimous awareness is reached.

Purifying rites
Purification rites are a vital part of Shinto and have also been adopted in modern life. A ritual of personal purification is linked to water, the purifying element par excellence: it consists in resisting under a waterfall or in performing ritual ablutions at the mouth of a river or in the sea, or simply through the appropriate sources of the temples, this last practice is almost always required before accessing the sacred place. Are these two forms of purification often referred to? harai. A third form of purification is refraining from something, i.e. a taboo (for example, women were not allowed to climb Mount Fuji until 1868). Taboos have all but disappeared in modern Shinto. Other beliefs include not saying words that are considered bad omen at weddings, such as the word cut, or not attending weddings if you have recently lost a loved one.

Various symbolic elements are generally used in purification ceremonies, among which the aforementioned water, salt and sand stand out. The general acts of cleansing are called misogi, while specifically, personal purification at the entrance to the temples, which consists of washing hands and mouth, is called temizu or also imi. A misogi ritual still widely practiced today is that which consists in throwing water around your home, to obtain purity.

Purification rites are always the first act of any religious ceremony, and are also practiced to bless important events. For example, new buildings built in Japan are often blessed by a Shinto priest, as are new planes or new cars. This type of purification ritual is called jichinsai. Even a rite of this type was held in 1969 to bless the Apollo 11 mission to the moon.

Salt is, after water, the other important element in purification rituals. Salt-related ceremonies are generically called shubatsu. There are various ceremonies in which salt is sprinkled in a certain place to eliminate impurities, called maki shio (literally "scattered salt"). Salt containers, called mori shio, are usually placed at the entrance to the houses, which are believed to have the effect of purifying anyone who enters the house. Maki shio is practiced in homes, and also, alternately or together with water, before the construction of a building. Salt is also symbolically offered to the deities by placing it on the kamidana house altars (see the section on domestic worship).

Small altar. Note the mirror, a representation of the kami.
An example of a kamidana, a domestic altar. «A sincere prayer reaches heaven. A sincere prayer will surely realize the divine presence. "

«The first and surest step to enter into communion with the divine is sincerity. If you pray to a divinity with sincerity, you can perceive the divine presence. "

Veneration, in Shintoism, has a very profound value and is considered a pure and sincere act. The Shinto ritual tends to satisfy the senses of man and to harmonize and pacify the mind. This is favored by the strong aesthetic of the rite itself, characterized by images, sounds and scents. The ceremonies are therefore primarily aimed at manifesting reverence and admiration for the infinite greatness of the kami, but also, and not least, the purpose of the ceremonies is to make man aware of the truth that surrounds him, making peace and harmony arise. .

Templar cult

In modern Shinto the heart of the cult is certainly the temple (jinja), where numerous ceremonies and practices are celebrated. There is no specific day of the week on which the ceremonies take place, the temples are in fact constantly open and available for the faithful, who can go there to pray to the gods and make offerings at any time they wish. Sacred spaces tend to be particularly crowded especially on the days when the matsuri, or national festivals, fall. The type of prayer with which the faithful seeks contact with the kami does not follow specific rules, in fact everyone can have a totally personal approach to veneration. Generally, on non-holiday days, people go to the temple asking the gods for constant protection over the family, luck to pass school exams, and obviously much more.

Veneration always corresponds to a contact with the natural world, which makes the temples oases of peace within the chaotic cities. The Templar cult emphasizes man's belonging to the universe of which he is a part. The rites help the faithful to understand the path he must take in life, offer him strength and support to overcome difficulties and support his spiritual vision of the world, between sacredness and purity. The aesthetics of the temple, essentially, is a fundamental element for prayer and veneration, it is one with them. the temple is in fact considered a mystical building, a place where it is possible to find a contact and breathe the sacredness of the world, which the sacred place in a certain sense channels.

The collective rituals are organized by the priests. These rituals are very precise and detailed, in fact they represent the balance of the world, and with such a meaning they must be respected in their entirety. The ritual model became common to all temples during the 19th century. Today, Jinja Honcho, in her constant work of modernizing Shintoism, is introducing new ritual models, more suited to the modern era.

Domestic worship

Veneration does not have to be an exclusively public act, in fact it is often practiced even within the home. It is common to set up altars, called kamidana (literally "shelf of kami"), on which a mirror is commonly placed, the object that best allows to give a representation of the kami. It is also possible to add sacred objects such as amulets, which can be purchased at temples. The altar is used to offer prayers and incense to the deities, as well as a number of traditional elements including: salt, water and rice.

Natural places

As an alternative to temples and domestic altars, a place considered sacred, sometimes even more so than man-made buildings, is nature itself. Mountains, lakes, islands, cliffs, beaches, forests, meadows as these uncontaminated environments are the maximum expression of the divine, they represent one of the ways to reach the contemplation of the sacred and the perception of the divine dimension of the universe.

An offering, in Shintoism, is a symbolic ritual that allows you to give something to the gods by getting in touch with them. There are various types of offers, although the most common are ema and origami.

The ema (. Ema?) Are generally acts of donation by the faithful to the temples. In medieval times, the rich could donate horses to a temple, especially when they requested the help of the divinity (for example to win in battle). For the sake of smaller entities it became customary to donate a painting of a horse in symbolic form, and these ema are popular even today. The believer can purchase a wooden tablet at the temple with the image of a horse on it, or other elements (symbols of the Chinese zodiac, people or objects associated with the temple, and more), write a wish or a prayer on it, and 'hangs on a notice board in the temple. In some cases, if the wish comes true or the prayer is fulfilled, he hangs up another one as a thank you. In many temples it is also customary to offer origami.

Conception of divinity
Shinto is a cosmic religion. With this definition we intend to affirm that it is a religion that sees the whole cosmos, that is, everything that exists, as a pure manifestation of the divine, is therefore a religion with pantheistic characteristics. In the Shinto religion everything is sacred because the very matter that constitutes all the things that exist has a divine foundation. In the first place, therefore, the principal form of divine entity is existence itself, nature, whatever it may be. Proceeding on this level, and affirming the strong animistic basis on which it is based, it can be said that Shinto teaches that everything is the holder of a divine force, a divinity, a spirit that presides over it and shapes its existence.

Cosmic energy
In Shinto cosmology, everything that exists is pervaded by a primordial energy, which feeds and composes all matter and all its manifestations, is the Musubi. This mystical force is comparable to the Tao of Taoism, a cosmic energy that gives rise to the whole and causes the evolution of the whole, through the eternal cycle of existence. It is the intimate link that exists between all things, the common element to everything that is part of the cosmos. Matsubi is also the harmonic and universal force that indissolubly binds the human physical world to the spiritual world of the gods, the kami.

The Tomoe, symbol of the Shinto trinity. Like most oriental traditions, Shinto is also a cyclical religion. In Shintoism, existence, in all its forms, originates first of all from the expression of the cosmic principle in a duality, two polarly opposite forces, the positive principle Yo and the negative principle In, corresponding to the relationship of Yin and Yang of the Taoist cosmology . From the alternation of these two primordial and opposite forces springs all existence, both physical and material and spiritual. Kami, like men, originate from the eternal clash between these two polarities.

In the mythological version of cosmology, the two primordial deities Izanami and Izanagi correspond to the two principles In and Yo.

Speaking of the Shinto trinity, it is absolutely wrong to think of a Trinitarian concept similar to that of Christianity. It can be said that the Shinto trinity is nothing more than the fruit of the cosmic relationship between the two primordial poles of energy. This triad includes the aforementioned In and Yo (the two poles), corresponding to the Taoist principles Yin and Yang, and a third part, called in Chinese Yuan. This third part represents what arises from the interaction of the two primordial principles, it symbolizes the phenomena and manifestations produced by their eternal interdependence. More briefly, it represents the third phase of Shinto cosmology, following that of bipolarity, or the manifestation of cosmic energy. This final manifestation that springs from the eternal interplay of the two primordial forces is the nature of the universe, its very existence, its life, its continuous progress in eternal cycles, as well as its multiplicity, be it spiritual, manifested through the gods. of the cosmos, the kami, be it physical, that is, corresponding to the human existential level.

Mysticism of nature

A Welsh-born writer who later moved to the Kurohime Heights in Japan wrote about an experience in Africa when he was taken by a local hunter to a place considered sacred by the Pygmies in the Zaire rainforest. The episode is as follows:

“There we found a cave, surrounded by tall trees. Only the birdsong could be heard, the monkeys moving among the trees and the roar of a waterfall. It was a wonderful place. The short brown-skinned hunter who had led us to this place wore nothing but a girdled kilt, a bow, and poisoned arrows. She tore out a flower and put it in her hair. Someone asked, "How do you know the divine is here? Can you see anything divine?" I thought it made no sense to ask such a question, but the hunter replied with a smile: "I can't see them, but I know that divine beings are around us."

This quote is a vivid representation of the essence of the Shinto faith, which is a great love and reverence for nature, in all its possible manifestations. In fact, Shinto places nature in a particular light, everything is sacred in itself, every living being and every rock in the universe. Nature is considered sacred as a manifestation of the strength of the kami and an eternal abode of themselves. In the Shinto vision, valleys, mountains, abysses, forests, rivers, even the cities and artificial forests replanted by man are manifestations of the divine essence of the universe, as the very matter of which everything is made up has a basis, a divine foundation.

A natural oasis in Tokyo. It is for this reason that the absolute importance of nature stands out in Shintoism, which has led to the custom of building temples especially in the heart of woods and areas of peace and meditative silence. A Spanish philosopher wrote:

"The most amazing spectacle of all the wonders of Japan is the spontaneity and natural dimension of its religion, characterized by temples surrounded by greenery, as if to indicate that the best place to go to seek the divine is none other than the world around us."

A religious context of this kind is incredibly suited to the modern mentality of man. In fact, while there is an increasing tendency to distrust the transcendent, a type of theology is growing that sees the very matter that constitutes all things as divine, as it is generated by the great divine energies that pervade the whole universe. It is in this way that Shinto survives in a country studded with very advanced technologies including robots, which are increasingly widespread. In a worldview in which everything that exists is believed to have a spirit, in fact, even a robot must consequently have one. This spirit is not to be understood in the Christian sense of the term, since this divine essence of a robot is nothing but part of the divine matrix that generates all the manifestations of the universe. Put more simply, the spirit of the robot is contained in the very matter of which the robot is constituted, since the matter itself is generated by the divine.

Modern science has come to discover that atoms are made up of further subatomic particles, these subatomic particles generate activity by moving from a positive to a negative polarity, corresponding to the two polarities that give rise to all the manifestations of the universe in the philosophies related to the concept of Yin and Yang.

The goddess Amaterasu. "Anything that is majestic and solemn, which possesses the qualities of excellence and virtue and inspires a feeling of wonder, is considered kami"
(Motoori Norinaga)

The kami, a term generally translated as "gods", "divinities", are the spirit entities that populate the whole universe, are the spirits of nature, and express themselves through it. For the faithful Shinto a waterfall, the Moon or simply a rock, can be considered as an expression of the kami and mystical elements able to put in contact with the divine sphere. Even simple forces, or the cycles that govern the universe, such as fertility or growth, can be seen as a manifestation of the imperceptible divine forces that populate nature.

The kami have also been defined with the term li, or "innate intelligences", or "principles". This myriad of definitions indicates the complexity in giving an explanation to the very concept of Shinto deities. The Chinese term shen ("beings of light", "divinity") is also often used, a more original form of shin, the root of the word Shinto (complete etymology explained in the introduction).

The kami are therefore not transcendent divinities although they are impalpable, they populate the same universe in which man is found, they are found only at a higher existential level. Over time the image of the kami has become characterized, so much so that it is common to find them represented in anthropomorphic form, and surrounded by large mythological corollaries, however the essential message has remained unchanged, the representations are only masks, aimed at making man conceivable such complex concepts. It is very common, in fact, in particular in modern Shintoism, to use a mirror to represent the divinities. This is the best representation that can make modern man understand such a profound concept. In fact, the mirror indicates that everything reflected by it is the incarnation and manifestation of the gods. Alternatively, geometric compositions of paper or cloth are also used as a representation.

The kami are collectively called Yaoyorozu no Kami (. Yaoyorozu no Kami? Literally "eight million kami"). The arcane name Yaoyorozu ("eight million") is not the exact number, but rather a symbolic way of indicating infinity at a time when this concept did not exist. The most important kami, and certainly the most invoked and revered is the sun goddess Amaterasu. The main temple dedicated to her is located in Ise and numerous minor temples are affiliated to it.

Example of dosojin statues.
Amulet dolls depicting dosojin. Other types of spirits and entities can also be included in the kami classification:

Dosojin: the dosojin or sai no kami or dorokujin, are the deities of the roads and paths, obviously more in a metaphorical sense than in a broad sense, therefore roads must also be understood as the paths of life, the directions and choices that characterize. The places where it is said they usually occur are marked by stones or sculptures, placed on the sides of the roads, or at intersections or near bridges. As the patron deity of the borders, the dosojins are said to protect against evil spirits and from catastrophes or traffic accidents. The signaling stones from the places where they are present usually represent small anthropomorphic beings, or alternatively they can be simple stones with inscriptions. In some countries it is believed that dosojin are manifestations of the kami of fertility, in other cases of the kami patron of children. Japan's popular fire festivals, held on January 15th each year, are known as the dosojin festival. It is customary for all ornaments, talismans and other decorations used in temples to be burned on this day during the New Year festival. The decorations, usually made of bamboo and paper, are thrown into the fire to propitiate health and wealth for the year that has just begun. This fire-related tradition has many names, including Sai no Kami, Sagicho, and Dondo Yaki. Tradition has it that from the crackling of the flames it is possible to interpret whether the year will be rich and prosperous. The origin of the dosojin stones has been lost in the mists of time. Similar traditions can however be found in the Buddhist world (in Japan itself the Buddhist-style dosojin are called jizo), the same tradition of signaling stones of spirits near the roads can be traced for example in India, where Buddhism was born approximately in 500 BC. Buddhism was introduced in Japan only in the sixth century AD, and with it probably the tradition of the dosojin.
Ujigami: Ujigami (??, literally "kami with a name") are particular kami, believed to be protectors of a specific location or country, and in many cases they are the spirits of the country's founders. Members of the community who worship a ujigami are usually called ujiko (although this name often indicates the group of people involved in the maintenance of provincial temples). These characteristics make the cult of the Ujigami very similar to that of Christian saints.
Mizuko: Children who die in infancy without being added to temple lists (see the Templar cult section), become mizuko (literally "water child") and are believed to cause trouble and plague. Mizuko are often worshiped in specific temples for the purpose of appeasing their anger and sadness. These temples have become more popular in modern Japan with the rise of abortions.
Ancestral spirits: Shinto teaches that every living being has its own soul, called reikon which, with death, assumes a status similar to that of the kami. Those who die without problems and in happiness become ancestral spirits, celebrated on the day of Obon. They can therefore be venerated as tenjin ("celestial spirits"), and they may be required to protect their family and family affairs and activities, a custom very similar, therefore, to that of many other great religions. A temple can also be built for very eminent and wise people, a common practice if the deceased was particularly popular.
Yurei: Yurei are ghosts. While happy souls become ancestral spirits, those who die unhappy or a violent death are claimed to become a ghost, one of the closest spiritual states to human for both Shinto and Buddhism. The term yurei literally means "haunted ghosts", because these spirits would tend to cause trouble.
Zoomorphic spirits: most of the Shinto temples have two statues depicting creatures looking like dog-lions at the sides of the entrance, they are the so-called komainu, depicting the guardian spirits of the temple who keep evil entities away. Temples dedicated to Inari are an exception, in fact they are typically guarded by foxes called tanuki (not to be confused with kitsune), a term that actually means "fox", and anthropomorphic birds called tengu. Obviously, many variations have arisen over time, for example you can also find spirits looking like monkeys. However all of these spirits are collectively called Henge, which means "shape-shifter", as it is believed that they can take on human form. The tradition of these guardian spirits can also be found in the Buddhist and Taoist traditions. There are hundreds of legends that tell of encounters between humans and these magical creatures, sometimes considered beneficial and sometimes evil. The two most common zoomorphic kami, the kappa and the dragon, also belong to this category.
Forces of nature: some forces and elements of nature are also considered manifestations of the divine matrix of the entire universe. These forces may include those represented by volcanoes, such as Mount Fuji, which is characterized by its patron goddess. In addition to them, every particular place, such as a cliff, a waterfall, a lake, are seen by the Shinto faithful as places of intense spiritual power.

Oni, evil demons.
Another depiction of dosojin.Yokai: the term is usually translated as demons. It is a not very defined category, which at times can cross over into others. Generally these are beings who inhabit a dimension very close to the human one. Most of them are said to avoid meeting men, although there are exceptions. Yokai are generally associated with fire and summer, as they would be attracted to heat. They are usually represented with a grotesque and terrifying aspect.

A komainu. Needless to say, the belief in these spiritual manifestations has strongly influenced the modern anime industry, Japanese cartoons. In them you can find hundreds of characters and spirits ostensibly inspired by the kami and sprites of the Shinto religion.

The question of the emperor

It must be said from the outset that the veneration of the emperor was not foreseen in Shinto prior to the Meiji Restoration (or at least it was much less emphasized), but introduced by the latter to strengthen imperial power. The cult of the emperor collapsed along with the collapse of state Shinto with the end of World War II.

The Tenno (emperor) was considered to be the descendant of Amaterasu and father of all Japanese and was therefore a kami on Earth (an ikigami or "living kami"). With the Meiji Restoration the cult was popularized, but previously the military governors (Shogun) had managed several times to usurp the power, despite the fact that the emperor was always seen as the true governor of Japan even in periods when the office was only symbolic. . Although Hiroito gave up his divine status in 1946, under American pressure (Ningen sengen), the imperial family remained deeply involved in the Shinto rituals that symbolically unify the Japanese nation (Imperial Shintoism). This declaration, although it was issued for political reasons, is religiously speaking meaningless and only indicated the end of the imposition of state Shinto.

The torii is par excellence the universally recognized symbol of Shintoism. Represents the portals that give access to temples or to any natural area considered sacred. The torii is a symbol of mysticism. It represents the eternal interaction, as identification, of the human world with the divine world. Crossing a torii means revitalizing the spiritual senses and continually renewing participation in life, the entire universe and one's own subjective existence.

The origin of this symbol is almost unknown, some connect it to the myth in which Amaterasu hid in a cave to escape Susanoo, others see its origin by analyzing the etymology of the word. Torii is in fact composed of tori, which means bird with the addition of an i at the end. According to this explanation, the first torii were intended to host birds, considered particularly important by the Shinto religion as they symbolize the contact between the Earth and the sky, metaphors of the human and divine world respectively.

The Tomoe, also called Yin-Yang-Yuan or Triple Taijitu, is the symbol of the triplicity of Shinto cosmic energy (see the paragraph on the Shinto trinity). Two of the three parts represent the two polar principles, Yin and Yang, the third part represents the universe, or all the manifestations that arise from the two primordial principles.

There are many variants of the Tomoe, given the great diffusion that the symbol has had, which in addition to characterizing Shintoism has also become part of Buddhist symbolism. The most widespread version is the purely tripolar one (Mitsu Tomoe), in line with Shinto cosmology. However, it is defined as Tomoe, also the symbol typically in Japanese style but bipolar, therefore comparable to the Taoist Taijitu. The appearance of the latter strongly influenced the style of the Chinese version of the Tomoe (Yin-Yang-Yuan).

Sacred rope

The sacred rope, in Japanese called shimenawa, sometimes abbreviated to shime, is a composition that appears very often in Shinto temples and sacred places. For example, it is frequently hung on the horizontal pole of the torii to increase its sacred meaning, or it can be found tied to the trunk of a tree, or around a rock, since it is considered an expression of spiritual powers.

The shimenawa consists of a rice straw braid, to which strips of paper are hung, the so-called gohei, which as already mentioned above are, after the mirror, the most used element to represent the deities. The word shimenawa is composed of three kanji of which the last is nawa (which literally means "rope"), while the other two correspond approximately to the terms "roar" (sosogu) and "series", "group", "collection "(ren). The word shimekazari instead indicates the set of decorations made with several shimenawa (kazari means decoration).

Fortune cat

“In the seventeenth century, in a Tokyo temple, there lived a very poor monk, forced to share his food with a Tama cat. One day, during a storm, a wealthy gentleman stopped under a temple tree to shelter from the rain. While he was waiting for the storm to end, he saw a cat, which with its paw, invited him to follow him towards the temple. The man got up to follow the cat and just at that moment a bolt of lightning struck the plant. From that day the man became friends with the monk and the cat, who no longer had to live in poverty. When the cat Tama died he was buried in the Goutokuji temple. "

This is certainly the most popular of the legends surrounding the figure of Maneki Neko, the cat of fortune. In each of these legends, however, there are similar details, in particular the rescue of someone by this cat. From popular legend, the Maneki Neko soon became one of the most popular symbols of Japan, and although of Buddhist origin, its depictions are also used as an amulet in the Shinto religion. It is very common in Japan to come across these feline-like representations in any type of environment, houses, restaurants, hotels, shopping centers.

Amulet Maneki Neko It is believed that this amulet has mystical powers and the ability to protect the environment in which it is found, bringing health, luck and money. The figure of the Maneki Neko dates back to the fourteenth or seventeenth century, and would have originated in Osaka, although earlier traditions could even date back to millennia, when the first cats were imported to Japan via China by silkworm growers.

Given the ancient origin of the belief in the Maneki Neko, there are thousands of different types, modeled in the most original forms and using the most varied materials, only the setting is always the same: a cat sitting with a bell tied around the neck and a paw raised in greeting. The position of the legs is interesting, in fact, although the representations with the left paw raised are more common than those with the right paw raised, the exact reason for the difference is not clear. Some believe that the raised left paw means money and luck, while the right means health. Others argue that the left favors business and the right the family.

The cat is also represented in a wide range of colors, each of which has its own meaning. The most common one is white, which in itself means good luck. The business of these amulets is of great importance in modern Japan, and there are workshops of artists specialized in the production of statuettes.

Modern temple in Osaka The practice of building Shinto temples, in Japanese jinja or jingu, originated with the introduction of Buddhism, probably in imitation of the temples of the latter tradition. In fact, the Shinto rite was originally practiced outdoors, usually with small mobile reliquaries or in areas called miya. Obviously it was possible to find exceptions, fixed temples, the first of which are identifiable as the primordial form of Shinto architecture.

The temple then adapted to different architectural styles, in addition to the Buddhist one it also absorbed features of the Taoist and Confucian styles. Today one can find manifest temples of each of this myriad of styles, from that used in most temples, to the style of the Ise temple featuring thatched roofs, to the modern style. In the apparent stylistic chaos, Shinto maintained its most original construction rules, in particular the materials used, the arrangement of the temple premises and the symbolic ornaments. A feature common to all traditional temples is the use of natural building materials, wood in the first place, although with the importation of Chinese architectural styles there was a fair spread of the use of stone, in addition to the introduction of painting and sculpture. In addition to architecture, Buddhism also influenced Shinto rituals and divine representations, in fact in the Middle Ages there was an explosion of Shinto representations with marked Buddhist characters.

Today, although most of the new temples tend to respect traditional styles, equally often there is a tendency to divert, experimenting and proposing new architectural styles, with the construction of decidedly futuristic temples, characterized by the use of materials such as steel, concrete and glass.

Traditional temple The Shinto temple has a very specific structure. It is always divided into a series of rooms each characterized by a specific function:

Honden: the sancta sanctorum, is the most exclusive area of the temple complex, it is in fact the most sacred room, which houses the depiction of the divinity. Often this area is closed to the public and only priests can have access to it, to perform purification rites.
Haiden: the "prayer room or" oratory "is the area where the faithful can go to pray and where some ceremonies are held. It is usually completed by benches and chairs, as in a Christian temple. However, it is not the only area in which in fact, in special temples such as that of Ise, both priests and lay people offer their prayers sitting outside, in the gardens of the temple.
Heiden: is the "offering room". It is not present in all temples as each of them passes on its own rites to celebrate the offerings. These offerings are symbolized by food, which can be placed on tables, hung, scattered in the woods or in the water. In some temples offerings are accumulated in heiden.
Chokushiden: this is a special room where the so-called "communion of foods" is held, in Japanese ainame, during which the faithful eat the offerings made to the deities. This ritual symbolizes the mystical union between man and kami, allowed by food, which is taken symbolically by both.
Other rooms: the temple also often hosts rooms used for ritual practices related to music and dance. They were introduced in the medieval period. There are usually two, symmetrically located to the right and left of the main hall. Music and dance are considered important, as they are said to promote harmony between man and kami.

Entrance area
The entrance area of a Shinto temple is in almost all cases marked by the presence of a torii. The name (which literally means "where the birds reside") indicates the classic mystical portal that signals the entrance to the sacred area, which in addition to a temple can be any natural area characterized by a strong beauty and singularity. A torii consists of two vertical pillars supporting two horizontal ones, and completed by a central tablet, between the two horizontal rods, which usually bears the name of the temple, the sacred area or a particularly significant phrase. The origin of this structure is almost unknown and is lost in legend (see the paragraph in the chapter on symbology for further information).

Torii from Itsukushima Shrine It is a very simple symbol, but with extremely profound meanings, it mainly symbolizes the gate that separates the physical world from the spiritual world. The torii is traditionally built of wood and painted in a vermilion red color. Obviously with time, and in particular in modernity, numerous variations have arisen, including stone and even more recently metal.

Sacred wood

Initially the Shinto temples were built in uncontaminated areas and isolated from the inhabited centers. Although with the great urbanization of Japan, today, the new temples (especially the small ones) no longer have the characteristic of being immersed in green woods, the main places of worship tend to keep it instead. This tradition must undoubtedly be linked to the sacredness of nature and the prominent place it must keep in human life, to allow man to always remain in balance with the world. The gardens surrounding the temples are a fundamental part of the Shinto religion, protector of nature as it is divine. The woods evoke that kind of harmony with the world and with the divine that the technologized man tends more and more to forget. Immediately after having crossed the first stage represented by the torii, in the great temples, you immediately enter the wood, usually crossed by a path called sando.

The sando, which crosses the wooded area and leads to the temple structure, is much more than a simple walkway, it represents a mystical journey. It reflects the path that man must take to reach the understanding of the divine, that is, to undertake a passage through nature, the only true means to know what the mystery of life is. The sando is a ritual path, which the faithful undertake to reach purification and free the mind, in order to reach the contemplation and veneration of the kami with the purest spontaneity possible. On the sides of the sando, which can often also be a staircase, statues of sacred animals, or stone lanterns, are frequently placed, dividing the path into a series of stages. It is also common for the sando, in certain temples, to cross a bridge, called a shinkyo. Crossing the bridge — and therefore the water — symbolizes purification.

Every natural phenomenon is an expression of the forces that govern the universe. Japan is one of the most industrialized countries in the world: to say that sixty-seven percent of its territory is still covered by forests would seem a paradox, yet it is a matter of reality. Japan probably owes this interesting oxymoron to its traditions and religious values rather than to its territorial geography and mountainous character, a model that certainly should be taken more into consideration.

Given the deep-rooted belief in the sacredness of the universe, temples represent in a certain sense a microcosm, a small reproduction of the natural elements in their essence: the garden represents the woods and forests of the whole world, the source for ablutions the river, the stones in the gardens represent the mountains and finally the ponds, represent the seas and lakes.

The expression conversion to Shintoism is not so appropriate, in fact, to become a Shintoist no conversion in the strict sense is necessary, that is, no particular ritual or membership of some community: this is because Shintoism does not require any transformation, as it is is already predisposed to embrace this religion, as it springs from the deep spirit of man. As a so-called natural religion, Shinto teaches that becoming a Shintoist simply means believing in its precepts, with consistency and feeling. Believing in his values and putting them into practice, believing in the kami, the spirits of nature: these are the two essential conditions that make a man a Shintoist.

Cultural Effects of Shinto

Shinto has been defined as "the religion of Japan" and the values and customs of this religion are inseparable from those of Japanese culture prior to the influence of Chinese ideas which occurred in the mid-sixth century. Many famous Japanese practices have direct or indirect roots in Shinto. For example, at the basis of the typical Japanese arts of ikebana flower arrangements, traditional architecture and Japanese gardens there are clearly the Shinto ideals of harmony with nature. A more explicit connection to Shintoism is in Sumo where, even in the modern version, some Shinto rituals are performed before a match, such as purifying the arena by sprinkling it with salt. It is still customary for many Japanese to say Itadakimasu ("I humbly receive [this food]") before eating, and much of the Japanese emphasis on correct forms of greeting can be considered a continuation of the ancient Shinto belief of kotodama (words with an effect magic on the world). Many Japanese cultural practices, such as using wooden chopsticks to eat or taking off shoes before entering a building, may have originated from Shinto beliefs and practices.

According to some, the Shinto ideology has had a notable impact on the new Western generations through Japanese manga and cartoons that are strongly permeated by it.

From the Japanese "Shin-tô" (the "Way of the Gods", according to the pronunciation "on", which can also be pronounced, in the manner "Kun", as "Kami no Michi") with the addition of the suffix "ismo" .

The Shintô, which does not recognize a supreme God, is a polytheistic cult of nature and ancestors. Originally Shinto was aniconic, that is, it did not have any image of the Gods only as a result of the mixture, in the Middle Ages, of this primitive religion with the Buddhism of the Great Vehicle, we began to see statuettes, representing the Deities, arranged in the various temples.

Shinto has formed the character and spirit of Japan, it is the religion of its myths and the beginnings of its history, over the centuries it has been an integral part of all aspects of social and political life. In Shintoism, a large number of divinities of nature are encountered, to which are added, in a later period, the terrestrial, local and familiar deities. There is talk of a number of divinities ranging from 80 to 800 thousand, hence the definition of Japan Shinkoku which means precisely "country of the gods". Only in the sixth century of the Christian Era, at the time when Japan entered history and began writing thanks to the wise China, the cultural beacon of the Far Eastern area (like Greece for our civilization), the ancient "religio ", Originally from Japan, received the Sino-Japanese name (" on ") of" Shin-tô ", which in pure Japanese (" kun ") was said as above" Kami no michi "(road / Way of the Gods), to distinguish from Buddhism which was called "Butsu-do" (road / way of Buddha), introduced precisely at the time of the 29th Emperor, Kimmei (540 - 571).
It has unified the culture of the people, sanctified all its rulers, not only the ancient ones but also the last ones, gave the ideologies to the Kamikaze and also inspired that sense of aesthetics and love for beauty that is the characteristic of the Japanese. it was the glue both on a religious and social and thought level, when Japanese culture first came into contact with Chinese culture and then with Western culture. It was Shintoism again that gave the Japanese people the moral strength that sustained them after the defeat of the last war.

The Sources of Shinto
The sacred texts of Shinto, collected and transcribed only in the Buddhist era, are three mythological collections gathered under the title of Sam-bu-han-sho (the three main books):

the Ku-ji-ki (history of ancient events up to 620 BC),

the Ko-ji-ki (history of antiquity that goes up to 712 BC)

and the Nihon-gi (Japanese annals up to 720 AD).

Editing of the sources of Shintoism

Legendary and protohistoric period:
constitution of the legends that form the basis of Shinto
620 BC: Jimmu, first Emperor of Japan (Mikado or Tennô, "Lord of Heaven"): he is a legendary character, considered the descendant of Amaterasu, Goddess of the Sun.
405 AD: Introduction of Chinese writing in Japan.
552 d.D. : Introduction of Buddhism
673-686: Kingdom of the Mikado Temmu who decides to fix the legends of Shinto and the imperial chronologies: he makes them learn by heart to a certain Hieda-no-Are
711-712: Writing of the Kujiki (collection of legends and ancient events that date back to this date)
713: Editing, by order of Empress Gemmyo, of a collection of costumes of the provinces (the Fudoki)
720: Editing in Chinese of the Nihongi or more precisely of the Nihonshoki (official annuals of Japan), under the direction of Prince Toneri.
907: Editing of Engishiki ("Regulation of the Engi era")
In Kojiki and Nihongi it is told of the ancient Shinto myths, of the creation of the world and men, of the origin of the Gods. Izanagi and Izanami.

The cult of the dead is one of the main characteristics of Shinto. The Japanese, constantly assisted by his ancestors, believe that the dead have an invisible existence, in which they continue to live as good spirits or evil spirits. They live in a country called Yomi, which corresponds to the ancient Hades of the Greeks.
As for the tombs, these are considered real residences of the dead, visited by relatives who communicate the most important events of the family to the deceased ancestor.

The faithful, in their worship activity, consider divine beings as givers of earthly goods in prayers they implore prosperity, a rich harvest, health, abundance of offspring, removal of misfortune, sin and guilt, repentance and redemption are not object of prayers.
There is no reward or punishment after death and therefore there is no Heaven or Hell.

The Scintô festivals, called Matsuri, which have a different duration, a month, three days or a day, are ceremonies of thanksgiving for the benefits received from the Gods or supplication ceremonies to ward off disasters.

A place of particular importance is held by the feasts connected with the religious adoration of the Imperial Family.
On the occasion of these feasts it is the Emperor himself who officiates the cult in the "sacred atrium" of the Imperial Palace.

There is an order of rank also in the Temples as for the Gods.

The most beautiful temples are those of Ise, where the Goddess of the Sun and the Goddess of Food are worshiped, that of Atsute near Negoya, and the temples of the kingdom which are dedicated to divine ancestors or to some emperors and high personalities.

Even among the Priests (who can also be female), who define themselves as "Officials of the Gods", different categories are distinguished.

Priests can marry and inherit their office in the family. In addition to their religious offices, they also carry out a profession and wear the priestly habit, which consists of a loose white robe with wide sleeves and a black taffeta cap, the latter only when they are involved in worship.
