How to remove fleas and worms from pets

Hooray! Spring has finally arrived, and summer is just around the corner. Both dogs and their owners are happy that you can walk for a long time and with pleasure, without shivering from the piercing wind and sleet. The cucumber tapeworm is also happy - its time has come! It is during the warm season that our dogs and cats are most often infected with this parasite. The biology of the cucumber tapeworm is closely related to the biology of other parasites of cats and dogs - fleas and lice, so we will have to talk about them together. It is in fleas and lice that the larvae of these worms develop. Dogs and cats become infected with cucumber tapeworm by licking and biting off these parasites. The owners of animals are well aware of the seasonal periodicity in flea infestation, their time is the warm season. Cucumber (or pumpkin-like) tapeworm is a tapeworm, cestode. They are called so because the body of cestodes is flat, like a ribbon. It is subdivided into separate segments, each segment containing both male and female reproductive systems. Therefore, in order to reproduce, one worm in the host is enough - fertilization occurs between different segments. The peculiarity of the cucumber tapeworm is that the rearmost segments in its tape are shaped like cucumber seeds. After the eggs ripen, the segments begin to break away from the body of the worm one by one and are excreted outward with feces. These segments are large enough to be seen with the naked eye, so those dog owners who have the habit of cleaning up their animal's feces on the street will definitely see them during this unpleasant but necessary action. The same thing happens in cats. But one caveat is needed here. The segments of the cucumber tapeworm are able to crawl actively, and outwardly they look like independent worms. They even cut one of the ends so that it imitates the head. So, if a domestic cat visited the toilet at a time when the owners are not at home, and a pile of feces remains immediately uncleaned, then these segments creep out of the cat litter at a speed of several centimeters per minute. Then they become covered with dust, dry out and it is much more difficult to notice them. Therefore, the infection of the cat can be skipped. Nevertheless, infection of a domestic cat, in the absence of fleas and lice, relatively rarely occurs at home. The entire life cycle of the cucumber tapeworm "scrolls" mainly on the street, where both the eggs of this parasite and the larvae of fleas are in the street dirt. So, a dog or a stray cat with feces isolated the segments of the cucumber tapeworm, they dried up and collapsed, releasing at the same time a kind of "cocoons" in which several pieces of the parasite's eggs are packed. Then flea larvae enter the scene. The fact is that flea eggs do not stick to the animal's fur. They are easily shaken off the coat and further develop outside the host. Flea larvae feed on organic matter found in street dirt. Thanks to the many stray animals, it contains a huge number of flea larvae. Eating this dirt, the flea larvae swallow the "cocoons" of the cucumber tapeworm, and the flea thus receives several eggs at once. In an infected flea larva, the larvae of this parasite develop. The larva turns into a full-fledged flea, which is actively looking for its owner. When a dog or cat passes by, the flea reacts to the characteristic shaking of the ground and jumps on the animal. Licking itself, it swallows a flea, and cucumber tapeworms develop in its intestines in 3 weeks. The biology of the lice is different from that of the flea. The lice beetles are wide flat wingless insects that look like lice. They are yellowish in color, 1.5-3 mm in size. They stick their eggs to the animal's fur closer to the skin. The lice larvae develop directly in the fur of the animal. The lice feed on detachable skin particles, but they can also suck blood. Cats and dogs have specific types of lice. Cucumber tapeworm can only develop in a dog's form, so infection with this parasite through lice occurs only in dogs. The question arises, how can lice eaters swallow the cocoon of a cucumber tapeworm? This happens when the dog is lying on the ground. Together with street dust, cocoons of cucumber tapeworm fall on its wool. Here the lice get to them. Cucumber tapeworms affect the small intestine. These are worms up to 70 cm long. The disease caused by cucumber tapeworm is called dipylidiosis. With dipylidiosis in animals, digestion is disturbed, diarrhea is replaced by constipation, animals are exhausted, become nervous, salivation, nausea are observed. Animals are worried about abdominal pain, perianal itching, leading to the fact that the animal fidgets with its back on the ground. Restless sleep, allergotoxic reactions - hair loss, skin itching are often observed. The owner may notice signs of hypochromic anemia - pallor of the mucous membranes of the mouth and eyelids. Appetite worsens, its perversions appear - the desire to eat inedible substances, feces of other animals. You can often read that such a perversion of appetite is associated with a lack of certain trace elements in the animal's body. This is partly the case. But this deficiency in dipylidiosis occurs due to a violation of the normal absorption of nutrients in the small intestine. The owner can feed his animal according to all the rules of science, and yet, with dipylidiosis, he will develop metabolic disorders. The liver is impaired, as well as its digestive and detoxifying functions. All these are nonspecific symptoms, they can develop with other diseases. But the presence of small "worms" in the feces of an animal, similar to cucumber seeds, is an undoubted sign of dipylidiosis. Dipylidiosis can occur without the isolation of the segments of the parasite. When an animal is severely affected by worms, a kind of "competition" develops between them, while those parasites that have inhabited the body earlier suppress the development of later newcomers. In such a situation, the cucumber tapeworm does not grow to its maximum size, the maturation of its reproductive system slows down and, accordingly, the separation of the segments with eggs does not occur. But such an underdeveloped parasite, nevertheless, contributes to the development of a bunch of pathologies associated with the defeat of the animal by worms. It is not yet known why, but there is a dependence of the frequency of infection on the sex of the animal. Cats become infected more often than cats; in dogs, on the contrary, males are more likely to be infected than bitches. The highest rates of invasion were found in stray and free-walking cats and cats (52 and 48%), as well as in stray and chained dogs (52 and 36%). The maximum number of cucumber tapeworms (up to 50 individuals) is recorded in the categories of animals exported to the countryside for the summer. Domestic cats and dogs are infected by an average of 15-20%. All preparations containing praziquantel are best for treating dipylidiosis. These are Droncit, Drontal, Azinox, Azinox plus, Alben C, Febtal, etc. A milk diet is recommended for seriously ill animals. Before giving the animal medicine, you need to make sure that there is no constipation. To combat constipation, castor oil is carefully poured into the oral cavity in doses from one teaspoon to three tablespoons (depending on the size of the animal). I already wrote in an article about toxocariasis that it is advisable to deworm young animals under the supervision of a veterinarian. However, before deworming, it is useful to show a veterinarian and an adult animal at least once a year to determine the state of the liver. This is due to the fact that modern anthelmintic drugs do not expel worms, but kill them right in the intestines of the host. In this case, the toxins of the parasite enter the animal's body. The liver is the main organ of detoxification, and if its functions are disturbed against the background of deworming, severe toxic lesions can develop. For liver diseases, the veterinarian will prescribe medications to the animal to prevent the development of complications. It is important to observe the correct dosage of the drug, depending on the weight of the animal. If you give a dose slightly less than necessary, then the parasite will not die. In this case, the ribbon-like body of the worm is separated from the head fixed in the epithelium of the intestine and is removed to the outside. The head remains in the intestine, and the growth of the parasite begins again. The owner, seeing a worm in the feces, will be sure of the success of deworming, while the parasite will survive it safely. It is not always possible to detect parasites in feces after deworming. Since parasites are killed, not expelled (which, in principle, is safer), they can be completely or partially digested in the intestines. The result of this process depends on how impaired the functions of the digestive system, in particular, the quantitative and qualitative composition of digestive enzymes. As for the prevention of dipylidiosis, it is obvious based on the way this parasite develops. No fleas and lice - no dipyldiosis. Therefore, the basis for the prevention of dipylidiosis, and other diseases of animals transmitted by them, is the fight against external parasites. I will talk in detail about fleas and lice in the next article. Here I would like to note the most important thing: an infected flea can spend a few minutes on an animal, and nevertheless be swallowed. Flea collars are a preventive measure, but not a flea control tool. I quite often hear stories that dipylidiosis was discovered in a completely domestic cat, which literally never stepped out of the apartment. Yes, this is quite possible. We regularly bring home on our shoes street dirt, which contains microscopic flea larvae. The conditions in the apartments are quite suitable for their development - warmth, enough cracks where you can hide, and dust that you can eat. Having developed into a flea, it will find its own owner, and then it is possible for a cat to become infected with dipylidiosis. It is through such fleas that children become infected with dipylidiosis, who often play on the floor and pull everything into their mouths. Infestation of children is also possible through street dirt containing fleas. Incidentally, it is precisely because of the possibility of infecting children with parasites of dogs and cats in some Western countries that a ban on sandboxes in playgrounds has been introduced. Infection in adults, although more rare, is also not an exceptional case.

How to get rid of earthen fleas?

To avoid the troubles associated with the penetration of parasites into the house, you urgently need to take tough measures:

  • treat the room with special preparations
  • wash all items in hot water or, alternatively, steam
  • wash and dry all carpets, bedspreads and pillows in the sun
  • remove fleas from pets
  • block the paths for insects to enter the room, sealing up all suspicious cracks.

After removing fleas, it is useful from time to time to use folk remedies for preventive purposes - this will help scare away uninvited visitors.

Insects often settle in secluded places at a height of no more than 1.5 m.

They hide in cracks in the floor, behind baseboards, in stuffed toys, carpets and furniture, since their flattened body and small size allow them to hide in the smallest shelters. Therefore, when processing, special attention should be paid to precisely these places of their possible habitat.

Sometimes parasites are caused by excessive moisture. In this case, you need to carefully check the communication systems and sanitary facilities. Everything should be well ventilated, and leaks should be excluded.

Professional pest control

If you do not want to engage in breeding these unpleasant insects, you can simply contact a special service. Calling such a team is expensive, but the owner of the apartment does not have to spend time on disinfestation.

Specialists use powerful drugs and know which places are preferred by certain parasites.

As a rule, professionals opt for effective, but safe, prolonged-release agents that destroy both adults and those insects that are just about to hatch.

A significant advantage is the fact that many companies give a guarantee for their services. If parasites reappear in the dwelling after treatment, they offer to re-conduct pest control for free. Also, the services work confidentially - information that processing was carried out in the house is not disclosed.

Flea aerosols

In the fight against fleas, insecticidal agents have proven themselves best, but nevertheless, it will not work to get rid of such parasites at once in this way. After processing, adults will die within an hour, but after a few days a new generation will hatch from the remaining eggs.

Therefore, it is desirable to carry out the processing several times.

Aerosol products work well for flea control. One cylinder is enough to process 10-12 squares of living space.

The most famous:

They are easy to use and ready to use right away. Sometimes the aerosol isn't enough to get rid of the larvae. For this purpose, powdery agents ("Pyrethrum", "Fenaxin") are more suitable. But in any case, in addition to chemicals, you need to prepare a vacuum cleaner, a cleaning kit, a mask and rubber gloves.

Anti-parasite solutions

If you need to treat a large room, it is better to buy an insecticide concentrate, dilute it and pour it into a spray bottle. It is much more economical than using aerosols.

Such flea remedies are well recommended:

It is enough to dilute these compounds with plain water and use as directed, following the attached instructions.

Folk remedies for removing fleas

There are many methods among the people that help to quickly and efficiently solve the problem of settling a home with parasites. You can remove earthen fleas using simple tools.

List of the most popular:

  • Soda and salt. Stir in a 1: 1 ratio. Scatter on the floor, furniture and windowsills, leave for 24 hours, then vacuum.
  • Infusion of wormwood, tansy and eucalyptus leaves. Take one part of each herb and pour 1.5 tbsp. boiling water. Insist for 24 hours. Spray the floor, skirting boards and window sills for several days.
  • Eucalyptus extract. Dilute in water and spray all rooms. Fleas do not tolerate the smell of needles.
  • Pine sawdust. This option is suitable for those people who have pets. The pet's bed must be filled with pine sawdust. The specific smell will scare away insects.
  • Garlic and brewer's yeast. Chop the garlic and stir in the yeast. Treat all floors and vacuum after 12 hours.

These funds are safe for human health and help to save a considerable amount. Therefore, it is better to try first to remove fleas with folk remedies.
