LLC "Plastfur" (St. Petersburg) offers plastic rollers for hanging tomatoes and cucumbers in greenhouses.

The roller minimizes the hanging time of the plants and allows one movement to adjust the decline of the bush as it grows, which greatly increases the fruiting time of each bush.

The plant is attached to the twine with clips that prevent twisting and injury to the stem.

How it works
• A plastic roller is hung on a trellis above each plant

• Plants are suspended from the twine using clips that prevent twisting and injury to the stem

• The plant is supported as it grows up towards the roller

• After harvesting at the bottom of the bush, the twine is released from the roller and the bottom of the plant is laid on the ground, while the top continues to grow and produce tomatoes

Benefits of using a plastic roller
• Saves a lot of time when hanging plants and further caring for them
• Allows you to smoothly lower plants as they grow in one motion
• The reel can carry up to 16 meters of twine.
• Available as a UV stabilized roller and twine

Coil installation and replacement

The plastic roller consists of two parts: a spool and a hook. For the first installation or after replacing the spool, follow these steps to attach the spool to the hook:

Check the orientation of the spool (b) and insert the spool (b) onto the shaft (a) until the shaft snaps into place. To remove the coil, remove it from the axle.

Pull the twine out of the spool and wind it around the groove at the tip of the hook.

Installing a plastic roller on a greenhouse wire

Hang the plastic roller over the wire (b). Make sure the coil (s) is facing the direction in which the plants will be lowered.

Lowering the plants:

Lift the twine with one hand and slide the plastic roller to the other side. The twine will be released, so you can pull the twine to the length required to lower it.

Pull the plastic roller along the wire in the direction of the release.

DIY home garden on the windowsill

There are many popular, special indoor varieties of peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers that bear fruit well at home, and not only for one season, but for several years. Moreover, the taste of some is even softer than that of those grown in the country. All you need are pots or boxes (they can hold 2 to 4 plants), soil, window sills and the necessary seeds.

Our expert, agronomist Mikhail Vorobiev helps us to understand the peculiarities of growing a home garden.

Perhaps, cucumbers are the most capricious plants requiring care. At home, as in the country, they need moisture and warmth.

Features:

Requires a sufficiently well-lit window sill (east or south). However, they can grow in light partial shade, because the homeland of cucumbers is the tropical forests of India.

Cucumbers need an even temperature: on average +20, and at least +22 degrees during the day.

The soil should always be well moistened. But you can't pour cucumbers either. The water should be warm, like a tropical rain: +25 .. +30 degrees. It can be heated simply by leaving the irrigation container in the sun or on a battery.

When buying seeds, give preference to self-pollinating early-maturing hybrids. Better bushy, shade-tolerant.

Popular hybrids: "Marinda F1", "Onega F1", "Masha F1", "Legend F1", "Seryozha F1". Grow well on the windowsill and varieties: "Zozulya", "April", "Flight", "Ukhazher", "Korolek", "Ragtime".

Growing zucchini in the open field

The next stage is planting marrow seedlings in open ground. And here, too, everything is not just like that. When growing zucchini in the garden, there are some rules that must be followed:

  • Preparing a place for zucchini at their summer cottage.
  • Moderate watering.
  • Fertilizing zucchini.
  • Formation of the plant stem.
  • Loosening.
  • Prevention against diseases and pests.
  • We sit down according to the scheme.
  • Temperature conditions.

Preparing a place for zucchini at a summer cottage

Growing zucchini outdoors, compared to other capricious vegetables, is pretty easy. This plant is unpretentious, because almost no one grows it in greenhouses. Zucchini grows well in the open field without requiring any shelter.

They also do not have great claims to the soil, and grow on relatively poor organic soils. But we will consider such a moment as an extreme case, and here it is also desirable that the soil be loose and nutritious. Note that the sunny side, sheltered from the winds, is preferred by most crops. And zucchini is no exception. We pay special attention to the acidity of the soil, which should be in the range of 6.2 - 7.2. By the way, loam is the most preferred option.

Further, it is worth noting the influence of crop rotation when growing zucchini. Here we need to understand after which crops you can plant zucchini. Peas and beans (legumes), potatoes, beets, cabbage, carrots, onions, or greens are considered good predecessors. And of course, all pumpkin seeds are considered bad predecessors, and so is the cucumber.

Soil preparation on the site for marrows, and not only, usually begins in the fall. Where we dig up the garden bed, with the introduction of a sufficient amount of organic fertilizers (manure). Here I would like to note that half-ready manure will be the best option.

It is not always possible to cultivate the land in the fall. And it doesn't matter, because in the spring, you can also dig it up. But there is one nuance here. In this case, we apply only rotted manure (humus) and mineral fertilizers. Fresh manure (not rotted) is not tolerated by most crops.

On a note
Growing zucchini on acidic soils is highly undesirable. And yet, fertilizers with chlorine content, this plant does not tolerate well.

Planting zucchini in the garden

  • Between the bushes 30 - 40 cm.
  • Rows at a distance of 60 - 70 cm.

On a note
We choose all these distances according to the circumstances. Where we take into account the variety and place of cultivation. We also take into account the fertility of the soil and the climatic zone.

Fertilizing zucchini

Growing zucchini without dressing in the open field is possible only on fresh and rested soils, normally filled with organic matter and mineral fertilizers.

In all other cases, feeding is simply vital. Below is a short list of ways:

  • The most popular way is solutions of mullein (1 in 10) and bird droppings (1 in 20). Useful in the early stages of development.
  • "Bud", "Agricola", "Biohumus" give impetus to the development of the root system and simply have a beneficial effect on the overall development of plants. Usually used in the early stages of development.
  • Ammonium nitrate, superphosphate and potassium (in a proportion of 25, 35 and 20). They are also used in the initial stages.

Important!
All dressings at the initial stages of development contribute to the development of the root system and the growth of the green mass of the plant.

Top dressing at the beginning of flowering:

  • Agromix. Here, 50 grams of the drug per 10 liters of water, or when loosening, we add 25 grams per 1 square meter of land. This is a complex complex fertilizer.
  • Add a tablespoon of nitrophoska to solutions of mullein and bird droppings.
  • Rossa is especially useful during budding. Where 2 tablespoons per 10 liters of water, while 1 liter of solution goes to 1 plant.
  • "Effecton" and ash. Where there are 2 tablespoons of the drug and ash per 10 liters of water. 1 liter goes to one plant.

Important!
We know that plants can receive nutrients not only from the ground, but also through the leaf system. Therefore, it will be very useful to make foliar feeding once every two weeks. The effect will not be long in coming.

During fruiting, the plant requires a huge amount of nutrients, and we need to pay special attention to this period:

  • Urea and ash. 1 tablespoon of urea and a glass of ash for 10 liters of water.
  • Nitrofoska. 3 tablespoons in a bucket of water.
  • Superphosphate and potassium nitrate. 50 gr. each fertilizer for 10 liters of water.
  • Copper sulfate, boric acid, manganese sulfate. We take 4 gr. everyone.
  • "Kemira", "Biohumus", "Agromix" and others. These are complex fertilizers that can be used for both root and foliar dressing.

Pure folk remedies

  • Ash. It is introduced during digging, solutions are prepared and simply pollinated with dry ash.
  • Yeast. 100 g yeast per 10 liters of water. First, the yeast needs to be revitalized in a small amount of warm water.

On a note
Yeast loves warmth, therefore feeding will only work in warm weather. And it is also useful to combine them with ash.

  • Infusion of herbs. Here the grass wanders in a barrel for 1.5 - 2 weeks, where the grass is half a barrel. The finished infusion is diluted 1 to 10, you can add a glass of ash.

Water moderately and loosen

Watering zucchini, and not only, must be taken seriously and a devil-may-care attitude is definitely not suitable here. Zucchini have a good root system. And they need more moisture than cucumbers. The difference lies in the frequency of watering and in the total moisture recommended for the normal development of the plant.

Young plants need to be watered every 3 to 4 days. At this time, the root system is still weak, and sudden changes adversely affect the development of plants. During flowering, water it twice a week. But even here you need to look, drying out is unacceptable. The clod of earth must be moist. But during fruiting, we water it once a week. Here you need to understand that with an excess of moisture, the keeping quality of fruits decreases several times. And the fruits can rot on the branch.

Loosening of the soil must be combined with watering. Loosen carefully so as not to damage the root system.

How to form a zucchini

Zucchini are common and bush, where bush varieties do not need to be pinched. But the climbing ones need to be formed. Where we pinch the stem over the fifth or sixth leaf.
Also during fruiting, you can remove some of the leaves.

Popular market patterns

If you don't have time to assemble a greenhouse or you don't have enough skills, you can purchase a ready-made version, fully or partially equipped for planting plants. The advantage of the market assortment in the variety of standard sizes:

  • you can find compact greenhouses and multi-storey systems
  • structures for installation on the floor and for hanging from the wall
  • collapsible and monolithic
  • with and without a frame.

Greenhouse JXX-10013 with 3 shelves

The most common option is prefabricated frames made of light materials (plastic, aluminum), covered with a thick transparent film. Here are some popular and inexpensive models:

  • Model JXX-10024 - balcony greenhouse with 4 shelves. It resembles a bookcase in shape. The assembled height is 1 m 54 cm, the width is only 68 cm. On four convenient shelves you can arrange pots with indoor flowers, seedlings, adult berries and vegetables in containers. The front wall has zippers at the edges. To get to the shelves, you need to unfasten the zippers, and twist a piece of film and fasten it at the top.
  • Greenhouse JXX-50012. Has a standard elongated configuration and a house shape. To get to the plants, you need to raise the slopes of the "roof". The frame is made of an aluminum profile, and the walls are made of polycarbonate. A great option for growing cucumbers or peppers. Height - 62 cm, length - 1 m 30 cm.
  • Greenhouse JXX-11004. It has a long length - 3 m 60 cm, therefore it is suitable only for spacious loggias. It is a frame covered with 0.14 mm PVC film. Zip vents are provided for access to plants.

All other models in one way or another repeat the listed configurations, but may differ in size, number of sections or shelves, frame material. As a covering material, a more durable polycarbonate or film is used, which is not particularly durable, but transmits sunlight better. The cost of factory models is from 1900 rubles. up to 4000 rubles

Balcony greenhouse making instructions

You don't need expensive materials or special skills to make a mini greenhouse on the balcony. It will take no more than 500 rubles to buy wooden blanks and film, and if there are a couple of boxes or old pallets at home, then even less. It is necessary to analyze the conditions on the balcony well and create a suitable project.

Compact portable mini greenhouse

Mini-constructions are convenient in that they are easy to rearrange from place to place and transport. There are not as many requirements for the creation of a small greenhouse as for the installation of a large structure. This is a creative version of the greenhouse, since you can use any household items to make it: shelves, boxes, containers.

Decorative box for seedlings

Such miniature containers are easy to decorate, so they often serve to decorate the interior of a loggia or balcony. Even if you use a simple wooden box, covered with a plastic cap on top, it will look appropriate against the background of indoor flowers or other greenery.

Greenhouse-bread bin for a balcony or window sill

To set up a mini-greenhouse, you will need a container: a specially purchased large plastic container, a wooden box, an old suitcase without a lid, a basket. The role of the protective cap will be played by the film stretched over the wire arcs. The wire should bend easily but retain its shape.

  1. We prepare the base - we lay it on the inside with a film to make it airtight.
  2. Bend the thick aluminum wire so that you get 2-3 high arcs.
  3. We fix the arcs to the base in any suitable way.
  4. We make a cover from a PVC film. You can take a large transparent bag or buy a finished product with zippers.
  5. We fall asleep inside the container with soil or arrange pots with seedlings.
  6. We put on a cap on top - the greenhouse is ready.
  7. A mini-greenhouse made by your own hands is installed on the balcony in the most convenient place for maintenance: on a shelf, table, windowsill or just on the floor.

Stationary greenhouse with timber frame

Having decided to seriously engage in vegetable growing or breeding balcony varieties of berries, it is better to implement a more serious stationary project. Consider how to make a greenhouse on a balcony from scrap materials - wooden blocks and film. Select the model initially: the horizontal structure is easier to maintain, the vertical greenhouse takes up less space.

Wardrobe with wood frame

Then we prepare the material and tool. Wooden bars and boards are picked up in a building supermarket, where you can also buy covering material. If you do not have the skills to work with polycarbonate, you can buy a durable greenhouse film. Glass is also suitable, but exclusively for those who have experience with it.

Metal corners or staples are usually used as fasteners for the frame; self-tapping screws or studs are also needed.

A set of tools that may come in handy:

  • hacksaw or circular saw
  • screwdriver or drill
  • screwdriver
  • pencil and tape measure
  • skin.

For protection and decorative treatment, you can use wood impregnation, varnish or acrylic paint.

Window version of a greenhouse on a wooden frame

Universal step-by-step instructions:

  1. We cut the bars according to the planned sizes. One part of them will be used to make the base of the greenhouse, the second - for the cover. If the vertical model is chosen, then 2 sets of 4 bars are useful for the doors.
  2. We process all the parts with sandpaper and then impregnation to protect the wood from mold and mildew, which thrive in a warm, humid environment. We pay special attention to the ends.
  3. We collect fragments of the frame - a separate blank bottom made of boards, four walls (two large and two smaller), a cover, doors.
  4. We fix the film on the blanks. We use either a construction stapler or thin slats. The second option is more gentle.
  5. We make the assembly - first the rectangular base, then the lid and doors. We use hinges to fix the moving parts, fix the rest with corners.

Painting can be done either before fixing the film, or after the final assembly of all parts.

Compact desktop model

Glass and polycarbonate are used less often, as they are more expensive and require skill in processing. In addition, these materials increase the weight of the structure, which is undesirable.

How to make a mini greenhouse or a small greenhouse on the balcony

A greenhouse for a balcony will help to increase seed germination, increase the yield of cucumbers and tomatoes, and create conditions for the growth of exotic indoor plants.

This is a convenient design, made according to the principle of a garden greenhouse. Before installing a greenhouse, you need to find out if the balcony is suitable, study the range of factory products.

And those who like to do everything with their own hands are given a chance to show their skills.

About the possibility of installing balcony greenhouses and greenhouses

Closer to spring, containers and trays with seedlings appear on the windowsills of summer residents and home gardeners. However, the area near the windows is limited, and the plants do not have enough space.

A better place for germinating seeds or permanent cultivation of crops is a balcony or loggia.

An open structure is not suitable due to the low temperature in the cold season, and a glazed and insulated room is ideal.

There are many ways to improve the conditions for the growth of vegetables, herbs and flowers, traditional greenhouses are recognized as one of the most rational ones. They differ in shape and size, but the purpose of all structures is the same - to make the process of growth, flowering and ripening of crops comfortable. The quality of development, fruiting, and ultimately the yield depends on this.

In fact, the insulated balcony is already a greenhouse.

The space of closed loggias, verandas and balconies has the characteristics necessary for growing plants:

  • maximum natural light
  • possibility of effective ventilation
  • sufficient free space to accommodate mini-greenhouses
  • proximity to the place of residence, which means guaranteed regularity of care.

In regions with a temperate and cold climate, insulation is mandatory: double or triple glazing, insulated walls, floor and ceiling. In addition, it is necessary to high-quality waterproofing of the concrete base, since the irrigation process is associated with the risk of flooding the neighbors.

Cucumbers, squash, and tomatoes love the extra warmth and moisture

If you allocate only one wing of the room for planting or growing seedlings, you can put a table with an armchair in the second. Thus, to combine a useful activity with a pleasant rest.

Thus, balcony greenhouses are used for various purposes:

  • only for growing seedlings for summer cottages
  • to grow berries or vegetables all year round
  • for summer plantings or for the care of a flower garden (winter garden option).

Types of construction for growing plants

Balcony greenhouses and greenhouses are very similar to counterparts installed in the garden. Greenhouses most often have a rectangular frame and an upper part in the form of a gable or gable roof. The walls are made of polycarbonate, and the slopes open according to the principle of swing doors (the hinges are fixed at the top). The main difference between the "home" models is the reduced size.

Due to the absence of drafts, the temperature under the film is higher

Greenhouses are characterized by a simpler assembly, they have ribbing and a film as a covering material. The most popular designs:

  • "Whatnot" - a frame with shelves, covered with a film
  • display cabinet - a more serious solution, corresponding to the characteristics of the name, but with transparent walls
  • mini-greenhouses and greenhouses of traditional horizontal shape
  • hinged closed covers, etc.

All of these configurations are stationary and portable. Almost all factory mini-models can be attributed to mobile options, while homemade products are often erected for a specific place and are stationary.

Small portable balcony greenhouses are lightweight, quick to assemble / disassemble and compact.

Showcases with a metal frame and glass (polycarbonate) walls, as well as wooden devices are much heavier and larger.

Stationary drawer model with lid - simple and functional

In winter, when there is a lack of lighting, phytolamps are mounted inside the structures. Airing can be done manually or automatically. The same applies to watering.

Inventive craftsmen manage to create a fully automated system with drip irrigation and ventilation, which is controlled by a thermostat.

Of course, electricity will have to be connected to create an automatic system.

What are the requirements for greenhouses

By choosing the right greenhouse or greenhouse, you can turn the balcony into a full-fledged vegetable garden. It has been empirically verified that even on a small balcony of a high-rise building, you can grow from 150 to 200 plants at a time.

To make a greenhouse or mini-greenhouse on the balcony with your own hands, you need to take into account a number of factors:

  • Frame dimensions. Large balconies, verandas allow the installation of voluminous structures, but on a typical urban balcony of 3 m² there is not much to turn around, so mini-models should be preferred.
  • Product shape. If there is not enough space for the standard version, you can consider vertical models designed for the type of cabinet. A large number of shelves allows you to place many containers with plants, while using a minimum of space.
  • Frame material. Despite the absence of wind, the base must be strong, since the total weight of pots and containers with soil can reach hundreds of kg.
  • Covering material. The main qualities of film, glass or polycarbonate, which are most often used for the manufacture of greenhouses, are transparency and tightness.

If you plan to increase the efficiency of growing crops, then even when drawing up a project, you need to think about a device for artificial lighting, ventilation or irrigation.

In winter, the empty shelves of the greenhouse can be occupied by thermophilic indoor plants.

Owners of summer cottages should take a closer look at mobile models that are easily disassembled and transported. If necessary, they can be quickly transported to the cottage or to the village.

Features of the lighting and irrigation system

Incandescent lamps have lost their relevance, as they are not quite a suitable light source for growing crops, moreover, their use is uneconomical. To create additional lighting in mini-greenhouses on the balcony, we recommend purchasing phytolamps. These are LED devices that operate in the red or blue light spectrum most desirable for plants.

Fitolamps are equipped with special mounts

Phyto-lamps operate from a 220 V outlet, are protected from accidental fire, have compact dimensions, and most importantly, they are safe for seedlings, as they emit a minimum of thermal energy.

To prevent the soil from drying out or, on the contrary, not being waterlogged, greenhouses can be equipped with a micro-droplet irrigation system.

There are several options that work directly from the tap or supply water from a large tank installed nearby.

The second solution is more correct, since the settled liquid in the tank contains fewer harmful inclusions than tap water, moreover, it has room temperature.

Micro-drip irrigation system

The irrigation structure consists of plastic tubes with small holes, which allow the plant soil to be dosed with moisture. Shut-off valves on the lines are installed to cut off individual lines if the seedlings, flowers or berries are less moisture-loving.

Drip irrigation is also good because it makes it easy to feed crops in greenhouses. To do this, you need to dilute a certain amount of fertilizer in a tank with water, and then just turn the tap.

Videos about mini-balcony greenhouses and greenhouses

Advantages of ready-made greenhouses (greenhouses) and video instructions for assembly:

Economical mini greenhouse for seedlings:

Plants, especially at the initial stage of development, need special care, warmth, and good lighting. Having made yourself a small greenhouse or a greenhouse for a balcony, you can create excellent conditions for the growth of dozens of seedlings or adult plants. An alternative option is purchased collapsible models with convenient unfastened PVC film covers.
