Tomato Sultan F1 - tasty and fruitful Dutch hybrid

The hybrids developed by Dutch specialists are distinguished by their unpretentiousness and resistance to diseases, but they do not always taste good. In tomato Sultan, endurance to various unfavorable factors is combined with excellent taste of rather large fruits. Therefore, the popular hybrid is successfully grown both on an industrial scale and in summer cottages.

The history of growing hybrid Sultan F1

Tomato Sultan F1 was bred by the famous Dutch agricultural company Bejo Zaden B.V., which is one of the leaders in its industry. The company became the originator of more than 600 varieties and hybrids of vegetable crops. She uses only the classical selection method (not genetic modification). In the Russian Federation, the tomato was declared for state variety testing in 1998. Zoned it in 2000 in the following regions:

  • Central Black Earth;
  • North Caucasian;
  • Nizhnevolzhsky.

The hybrid is recommended for commercial production, but it is also successfully grown by summer residents in open and closed ground.

Description and characteristics of tomato Sultan

The plant belongs to the determinant type (with limited growth), the bush is undersized, grows up to 50-60 cm. Dark green leaves of medium and large size. The inflorescence is simple. The peduncle is articulated. On the brushes, 5–7 ovaries are formed.

According to the State Register, the average weight of fruits is 75-147 g (can reach 180 g), the originator claims that tomatoes weigh 150-200 g. The shape is flat-round, with a slight ribbing in the area of the stalk. The unripe fruit is light green in color, the stalk has a green spot. Fully ripe fruits become uniformly red, the stain also turns red.

Transportability is good. For long-term transportation, the fruits are harvested at the stage of brown or pink ripeness. Tomatoes retain their presentation for a long time,

The number of nests is more than four (5–8). There are few seeds in the seed chambers. The pulp is juicy, quite dense and fleshy, it has excellent taste, which is not always characteristic of tomato hybrids. The juice contains:

  • dry matter - 4.5–5%;
  • total sugar - 2.2-2.8%.

In many sources, the variety is classified as beef-tomato. The fruits are recommended for fresh consumption and processing into tomato products (juice, pasta, mashed potatoes, sauces, ketchup, etc.).

Beef tomatoes have large fleshy fruits (weighing more than 150 g), which are characterized by high nutritional value: they have a high content of dry matter, sugars, beta-carotene.

The ripening period is medium early, the fruits ripen in 93–112 days after full germination. The yield of the crop is stretched out until autumn. According to the State Register, depending on the region of cultivation, the industrial yield of the Sultan is comparable to the level of known standards or exceeds some of them. Regional productivity indicators are as follows:

  • In the Central Black Earth Region - 144-565 kg / ha, at the level of Dar Zavolzhya and Lyana standards.
  • In the North Caucasus - 280-533 c / ha, 75-105 c / ha higher than the standards of Perseus and Dar Zavolzhya.
  • In Nizhnevolzhsky - 254-545 c / ha, 30-107 c / ha higher than the Aran 735 and Perseus standards.

The maximum harvest was recorded in the Astrakhan region, it amounted to 559 c / ha, which corresponds to the Perseus standard. Sources say that 5-7 kg of tomatoes can be harvested from one bush. The indicator of marketability of ripe fruits is 82–94%.

Tomato Sultan bears abundant fruit, and also has a high rate of fruit marketability.

It is noted that plants normally tolerate stressful conditions, set fruits well at low temperatures, and can successfully bear fruit in hot summers. There is immunity to verticillium and fusarium.

Advantages and disadvantages of a hybrid

The variety has many advantages:

  • short stature;
  • plants do not require pinching;
  • extended period of fruiting;
  • large-fruited;
  • good presentation;
  • excellent taste of fresh fruits;
  • excellent quality of processed products;
  • high productivity;
  • good transportability;
  • endurance to stressful growing conditions;
  • resistance to verticillium and fusarium.

There were no downsides to the hybrid, except for one thing: you cannot collect your own seeds, and purchased ones are not cheap.

Seeds of hybrids do not need pre-sowing preparation. They go through a full processing cycle with the manufacturer, which usually ends with inlay.

Covering seeds with a special brightly colored shell containing nutrients and protective agents is called encrusting.

Seedlings: growing and planting in a permanent place

Sultan tomato is grown in seedlings. Sowing seeds is carried out in the second half of March. For cultivation of varieties in greenhouses, seeds are sown 2-3 weeks earlier.

In the southern regions, usually the valuable place of greenhouses is not occupied by undersized determinant varieties, the Sultan grows well and bears fruit in an open garden. In difficult climates, it is better to grow tomatoes in greenhouse conditions.

When using inlaid seeds, it is important to remember that drying out of the soil is unacceptable, since an insufficiently soaked shell will not allow the seed to germinate. The rest of the seedlings are provided with standard care.

In order for the sprouts to penetrate the shell of the encrusted seeds, they need a sufficient amount of moisture in the soil.

In 55-60 days after the emergence of full shoots, the seedlings will be ready for planting in a permanent place. The planting material is planted according to the usual rules for culture. Place compact bushes according to the scheme 30-40x50 cm.

Features of plant care

The described variety does not create any particular problems for the gardener; with normal care, you can get a good harvest. Plants do not require compulsory pinching, but when the stepsons are removed, the fruits will form larger, and their ripening will also accelerate. At the stage of pouring and ripening tomatoes, the brushes should be tied to the supports.

Plants are watered in dry weather once every 5-7 days, the frequency of irrigation is adjusted depending on the amount of precipitation. The volume of water used is dosed, waterlogging should not be allowed. Loosening and mulching the soil will help keep it moderately moist.

Bushes are fed every 2 weeks. For top dressing, you can use complex fertilizers and liquid organic matter (infusions of cow dung, chicken droppings, freshly cut grass). It should be remembered that plants need nitrogen only in the first half of the growing season, then potash and phosphorus fertilizers should be preferred. Wood ash is a great source of potassium.

Reviews of gardeners about the Sultan tomato variety

The hybrid was bred for commercial production, but it is also great for small summer cottages. With the usual care on compact, low bushes, you can grow a bountiful harvest of excellent quality tomatoes. The variety makes it possible to consume fresh tasty tomatoes until autumn and at the same time prepare high-quality homemade canned products.
